Waiting patiently for tomatoes and watermelon

Slowly the tomatoes are turning red and the watermelons are getting melon-sized.  I am going to perfect my ripe-thumping technique by the end of the year.  I’ve always thumped melons, but it’s mostly for show – not entirely sure what sound I am listening for.  The corn is starting to be ready as well.  We tried some out this weekend, and some eggplant too, but they were both slightly too early.

  1. I found out today that corn sometimes grows extra roots to anchor itself. That’s fine. Does it sometimes also suffer from gigantism like those giant liger things?
