CSA – Week 9

In This Week’s Share

  • salad mix
  • lettuce mix
  • pac choy – two heads of asian greens that resemble bok choy
  • salad turnips or radishes
  • summer squash
  • cucumbers
  • red potatoes
  • tomatillos
  • celery – the celery stalks will be a little thinner than you’re used to. celery is very finicky so we’re picking it young to make sure we give it to you at the peak of its health.
  • tomatoes – the first tomatoes have arrived. you will get either one large or two smaller tomatoes, with plenty more on the way. please store your tomatoes at room temperature – refrigeration diminishes their homegrown, fresh-picked flavor. we have about a dozen different heirloom varieties and we will try to make sure you get a sampling of each as the season continues.
  • basil – please excuse some aesthetic shortcomings on the basil this week. some of it is getting attacked by japanese beetles, which are difficult to control organically.
  • parsley

Farm News

Farming in the middle of the summer is not easy. Our days are long and our bodies are tired. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. Wendell Berry sums it up most eloquently:

“Why do farmers farm, given their economic adversities on top of the many frustrations and difficulties normal to farming? And always the answer is: ‘Love. They must do it for love.’ Farmers farm for the love of farming. They love to watch and nurture the growth of plants…They love to work outdoors. They love the weather, maybe even when it is making them miserable.”
